College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Fees:
Each CLEP exam costs $70 payable to CLEP. In addition, OSU-Tulsa Testing Services' administration fee (payable to OSU-Tulsa) is $20 for exams without an essay portion and $35 for exams with essays. Examinees may pay these fees by credit card, cashier's check, or money order; but each fee must be paid separately. OSU-Tulsa administration fees should be paid at the Office of the Bursar in Administration Hall. CLEP fees should be paid at the Learning Services Center. The CLEP examination fee is waived for all eligible military personnel with proper ID; however, military personnel will still be required to pay the administration fee.

Registration:
Examinees may register for the exam when they arrive at the testing center. We ask that examinees make an appointment to make sure that a computer is available on the desired date and time. When scheduling an appointment, allow approximately two hours for both registration and the exam itself or four hours for exams with essays. Exams may be scheduled Monday through Friday during our hours of operation. The Freshman College Composition exam for OSU cannot be scheduled any later than 12:00 pm.

Required Identification:

  • Two forms of identification are required.
  • The primary ID must be a government-issued photo ID. The ID must include the examinee's name, signature, and a recognizable photograph. Examples of a primary ID are a current driver's license, a current state or federal ID card, a current passport, a tribal ID card, or a naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.
  • The secondary ID must contain either a photo or a signature. Acceptable forms of this identification include a current employee ID, a current student ID, a Social Security card, a military ID, or an unused ID from the primary choices above.
  • Eligible military personnel must present a current military photo identification card and a second form of government-issued photo ID with name and signature.

Description:
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a series of examinations in 34 introductory college subjects that allow individuals to earn college credit for what they already know regardless of how that knowledge was acquired: through advanced course work, independent study, work experience, professional development, or extracurricular activities. OSU awards credit for successful scores on several CLEP exams. Click here to see a list of CLEP exams offered for OSU credit, the credit-granting score, and the equivalent courses.

CLEP exams are 90 minutes long unless an essay portion is required, primarily multiple choice (although some exams have fill-in-the-blank questions), and are administered on computer. The examinee will receive an instant unofficial score report following completion of the exam.

For descriptions of individual CLEP exams, visit the following website: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/exams.html

Freshman College Composition CLEP exam for OSU Students
This exam is computer-based and is administered in two parts:

  1. Objective component (90 minutes). If the examinee completes the objective component and receives a score below 53, the exam is over; the essay component is not administered and no credit is awarded. If the examinee receives an objective score of at least 53, he/she proceeds to the essay component.
  2. Essay component (90 minutes). The essay component requires the examinee to write two essays. The two essay scores are combined for a final essay score and credit is awarded as follows:
    • Final essay score less than 13 = no credit
    • Final essay score of 13 = ENGL 1113
    • Final essay score of 14 and above = ENGL 1113 and 1213

Scoring Information:
Examinees will receive an unofficial score report upon completion of the exam. If examinees want their scores sent to a college, employer, or certifying agency, they must select this option through the examination software on the day of the exam. A $20 fee will be charged for each transcript ordered at a later date. Scores will be kept on file by CLEP for 20 years.

If an examinee has taken the English Composition with Essay, he/she will receive one combined score after the essay has been scored, usually three to four weeks after the test date. If an examinee has taken the Freshman College Composition with Essay for Oklahoma State University, he/she will receive unofficial scores immediately upon completion of the exam.

Policies and Procedures:

  1. Examinees must pay the exam fee and administration fee by cashier's check, money order, or credit card. CLEP does not accept cash as a method of payment.
  2. Each examinee must bring appropriate identification as stated above.
  3. Examinees must wait 6 months before retaking any exam.
  4. Examinees are permitted to bring the following materials into the testing area: personal identification, scratch paper provided by the test center, and a pencil (non-mechanical). No other items are allowed in the testing room, including calculators, books, papers, notes, cell phones, cameras, recording devices, pagers, any reference materials, and food or beverages.
  5. Examinees may not wear or take a hat with a bill or brim into the testing room without prior approval.
  6. Visitors are not allowed in the testing room.
  7. Examinees are not permitted to ask any questions after the test begins; they should ask all questions before the test begins.
  8. Any examinee who gives or receives assistance during the test will be required to immediately turn in all test materials and leave the room. His/Her test will not be scored, and there will be no refund.
  9. If an examinee is planning to take a CLEP test for credit at a university other than OSU, he/she should contact the admissions office of that university for information on which CLEP exams are accepted for his/her course of study and the credit-granting score at that university. Because all universities have unique policies concerning course credit earned by CLEP examination, staff in the OSU-Tulsa Testing Services cannot advise examinees on which exams or scores will count for credit at another university.

Retesting Policy:
Examinees may not repeat an examination within six months of the testing date. If a student retakes the examination within a six month period, the administration will be considered invalid, the score will be canceled, and any test fees will be forfeited.
