Michael Wallis Route 66 Research Collection

Michael Wallis is a historian and biographer of the American West. His many books include Route 66: The Mother Road; Songdog Diary: 66 Stories from the Road; Route 66 Postcards: Greetings from the Mother Road with Suzanne Wallis; and Hogs on 66: Best Feed and Hangouts for Road Trips on Route 66 with Marian Clark. He is also the author of articles and essays which have appeared in both national and international magazines and newspapers including Time, Life, People, Smithsonian, Texas Monthly, and The New York Times. He is also a contributing editor for Oklahoma Today.

Mr. Wallis has been nominated on three occasions for the Pulitzer Prize and has also been a nominee for the National Book Award. Winner of numerous other awards he also has been inducted into the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame.

The Wallis Papers were acquired from the author in January 2001. The Library houses the books he used and research he conducted in the process of writing his books. The material on Route 66 includes menus, maps, photos, and handwritten notes as well as audio materials and oral histories.
